My husband had this picture on his computer desktop. At first glance, I thought it was a Photoshopped rendering of Milan's canals (yes, Milan has canals) mashed up with some Swiss village. But it's actually a picture of Milan taken on an incredibly windy day. Wind is kryptonite to the Milanese as they are unaccustomed to it. Like scurrying Prada-clad cockroaches, they seek cover in their Mini Coopers and minimalist mansard-roof apartments. But I like wind especially because it means the smog gets blown away. In fact, in this picture, you can not only see the top of the spires of the Duomo and the golden Madonnina but the Alps (or perhaps these would be pre-Alps) rising majestically over the notoriously windless city. A rare site indeed.

"Like scurrying Prada-clad cockroaches, they seek cover in their Mini Coopers and minimalist mansard-roof apartments."
I am milanese, but I agree with you on this. Milanese people thinks to leave in a very cool city, a kind of New York or London, but they don't realize that Milan is very, very ugly.
So they pretend to be cool going around in Mini Cooper or Smart.
Anon,
It is!
J. Doe,
The mountains are very close. You normally don't see them because of the smog!
Chia,
Piace anche a mio marito! Non è che odio Milano. E' che mi dice poco...
Anon2,
My husband is Milanese as well. Milan has its cool moments but I do prefer New York. But, Milan's not so bad. Dai!
Wow,this doesn't look real! I live right next to the canal and haven't seen this view before!
Autumn
Just for curiosity, could you kindly highlight the positives of this city?
Come on, Milano is butt ugly, compared to the other cities in Italy. Has few positives (geographical position and industry) and loads of negatives (expensive, dirty; dog poop and graffiti everywhere, lousy wages, unfriendly people, spoilt kids etc...)
Some time ago i read a honest and frank article by Philippe Daverio - the person who used to host the programme, Passepartou on Rai 3, he is so right,

I have lived in Rome and can say that it was a total different situation: weather and general feeling.

wow, that is an amazing photo.
I didn't realize that the smog was so bad.
Great photo! My kids complained about the Milan smog when they were there a few years ago. Hope you and your family are all well.
Milano è un pacco, vero. Non la amo più. Che città ami tu in Italia e anche all'estero?
Amazing photo. I had no idea there were canals in Milan. Something new to explore! Thanks!
Gorgeous photo! I never knew Milan had canals. The only time I visited it was so smoggy we thought we were in LA ;) This photo makes it look so cosmopolitan.
